Good to know at BJ's Wholesale Club
BJ's accepts Visa, Mastercard, American Express and Discover, so unlike Costco there is no network filter to clear before you compare rates — every card in your wallet works at the register. The ranking is led by the BJ's One+ Mastercard at 5%, though it scores 4.50 rather than a clean 5.00 because BJ's pays in club credit worth about 0.9 cents on the dollar, and that credit is only spendable back inside BJ's.
The 5% also has a price attached. The One+ rate requires the paid Club+ membership tier, and it replaces the 2% that Club+ already pays you rather than stacking on top of it. The plain BJ's One Mastercard needs only a base Club membership and earns 3%. In real terms the two cards are 4.5% against 2.7%, a gap of about $54 of club credit on $3,000 of annual club spending — measure that against what the Club+ upgrade costs you before assuming the higher rate is worth it.
The same arithmetic explains why the AAA Daily Advantage Visa Signature Card ranks second at 3% while the BJ's One Mastercard sits third at the same advertised 3%: the AAA card pays real cash rather than credit you can spend in exactly one store, it has no annual fee, and you do not need a AAA membership to apply. Its limit is unusual and worth reading carefully — the cap is on cash back earned, $500 per calendar year across groceries, wholesale clubs and gas combined, after which it pays 1%. So if you already pay for Club+, carry the One+ inside the building; if you are on base Club and not planning to upgrade, the AAA card is the stronger everyday pick. Fuel is a separate question entirely: BJ's Gas has its own page, and the answer there is not this one.
The math
Spend $400 a month at BJ's Wholesale Club and BJ's One+ Mastercard returns about $216 a year at our valuations — a flat 2% card returns $96.
Common questions
- What is the best credit card at BJ's Wholesale Club?
- BJ's One+ Mastercard earns the most at BJ's Wholesale Club right now at 5x.
- How does SwipeCaddy pick the best card at BJ's Wholesale Club?
- We rank each card by its reward rate times a conservative cash value of its points or miles — no inflated transfer valuations — and apply BJ's Wholesale Club's card-acceptance rules, so the "best" card is one you can actually use at the register.
- Does BJ's accept American Express and Discover?
- Yes. BJ's takes all four major networks — Visa, Mastercard, American Express and Discover — so there is no Costco-style restriction to work around. That means you can pick purely on rate rather than on which logo is printed on the card, which is why a general-purpose cash-back card can compete with the store's own here.
- Do I need Club+ to earn 5% with the BJ's One+ Mastercard?
- Yes. The 5% rate on the BJ's One+ Mastercard requires the paid Club+ tier, and it replaces the 2% that Club+ membership itself pays rather than stacking with it, so you are not earning 7%. The plain BJ's One Mastercard earns 3% on a base Club membership with no upgrade required.
