PayPal Cashback Mastercard

Synchrony · Mastercard · No annual fee · Earns Cash Back

3% whenever you check out with PayPal online — any merchant qualifies, because the rate follows the CHANNEL, not the category — and 1.5% everywhere else. Uncapped, which is rare at this rate. Two catches: it charges a 3% foreign transaction fee, so keep it home, and authorized users earn 1.5% even through PayPal.

Our take

The PayPal Cashback Mastercard is unusual because its best rate follows the checkout channel, not the merchant category. Pay with PayPal online and you earn 3% back, whether that is a boutique retailer, a marketplace seller, or a subscription that happens to accept PayPal — any merchant qualifies. Sending money to other PayPal users earns 3% as well, and everything else earns a flat 1.5%. There is no annual fee, and Synchrony states plainly that the 3% is uncapped, which is genuinely rare at that rate.

Two limits decide whether the 3% is really yours. First, the elevated rate belongs to the primary cardholder only: authorized users earn 1.5% on everything, including PayPal checkout, so adding a partner to the account does not double your 3% spending. Second, a 3% foreign transaction fee makes this a domestic card — the surcharge wipes out the 3% rate abroad and turns the 1.5% rate into a loss. You also need an active PayPal account to hold and earn on the card, and there is no signup bonus to cushion the first year.

One more line item deserves attention on a card sold as fee-free: paper statements cost $1.99 a month, so stay enrolled in paperless billing or you are paying roughly $24 a year for a $0-fee card. Used the way it is designed — primary cardholder, domestic spending, PayPal selected at every online checkout that offers it — this is a clean uncapped 3% online card with a 1.5% floor everywhere else. Keep a no-foreign-fee card for travel, and let this one handle the browser tab.

The math

Run $250 a month of flights through this card and you're earning about $90 a year at our conservative valuations. There's no annual fee to earn back — everything above the 1.5% base rate is pure upside.

Common questions

Does PayPal Cashback Mastercard have an annual fee?
No — PayPal Cashback Mastercard has no annual fee.
What does PayPal Cashback Mastercard earn on flights?
3% on flights.
What rewards does PayPal Cashback Mastercard earn on everything else?
1.5% on all other purchases, in Cash Back.
Is the 3% on PayPal checkout really uncapped?
Yes. Synchrony states the 3% affirmatively as unlimited, which matters because most 3% categories carry an annual or quarterly spending cap that quietly drops you to 1%. Here the rate holds all year on PayPal online checkout and on money sent to other PayPal users, with 1.5% on everything else. Just remember the rate follows the PayPal channel, so you have to actually select PayPal at checkout.
Do authorized users earn the same 3%?
No, and this is the most commonly missed condition on the card. Authorized users earn 1.5% on all purchases, including PayPal checkout; the 3% belongs to the primary cardholder alone. If a household wants two people earning 3%, each person needs their own account rather than a shared one. Also skip this card abroad — the 3% foreign transaction fee cancels out any rate it pays.
