The BJ's One Mastercard earns 3% back at BJ's — in-club, on BJs.com and in the BJ's app — and 1.5% on everything you buy outside the club. Capital One charges no annual fee on the card itself, but there is still a price of admission: you need a BJ's membership, and the base Club tier runs about $60 a year. At 3%, roughly $2,000 of club purchases produces $60 in rewards, and those rewards can be applied to the membership fee, so a household that does its bulk shopping here can make the card pay for its own membership.

Two things keep this from being a plain 3% cash-back card, and both deserve to be said up front. Your rewards are BJ's credit, not cash: you redeem them at a BJ's register, and they buy nothing anywhere else. And BJ's Gas earns absolutely nothing — fuel is excluded from the 3% and from the 1.5% outside-of-BJ's rate alike. What you get at the pump instead is an instant 10 cents off per gallon when you pay with the card and scan your membership card. Ten cents off a $4 gallon is 2.5%, so it usually beats the 1.5% you are giving up, but it is a discount at the pump, not a balance you can spend later.

The 3% carries a real exclusion list too: alcohol, tobacco, gift cards, membership fees, and anything paid through PayPal or another third-party wallet. That last one is the easy mistake, because paying through a wallet in the app quietly drops you to the base rate. The practical routine is simple — swipe the card directly for groceries and general merchandise inside the club, use it at BJ's Gas purely for the per-gallon discount, and if you already carry a flat-rate card that earns more than 1.5%, let that one handle everything beyond BJ's doors.
