BJ's One+ Mastercard

Capital One · Mastercard · No annual fee · Earns BJ's Rewards

No annual fee on the card itself, but it REQUIRES the paid Club+ membership tier — that upgrade is the real cost, so weigh it against the 5%. Rewards are BJ's credit, not cash. The card's 5% replaces the Club+ membership's own 2% back rather than stacking with it, and BJ's Gas still earns nothing (10 cents off per gallon instead).

Our take

The BJ's One+ Mastercard is the upgraded version of Capital One's BJ's card: 5% back at BJ's and 2% on everything outside the club. The card has no annual fee, but that headline hides where the money actually goes — the One+ requires the paid Club+ membership tier, so the upgrade fee, not the card fee, is the real cost. The arithmetic is easy to run yourself: every $1,000 of club spending earns $20 more than the 3% One card would, so divide the Club+ upgrade price by 20 and you get the number of thousands you must spend at BJ's before the upgrade breaks even.

Now the correction that trips up most write-ups: the card's 5% replaces the 2% back that the Club+ membership already gives you — it does not stack on top of it. We verified this, and it matters, because the common assumption is that Club+ plus the One+ adds up to 7%. It does not. Five percent is the whole number, and it is the number the Club+ upgrade price has to justify. Everything else about the program is inherited from the standard card, including the fact that rewards are BJ's credit redeemable only at a BJ's register, not cash.

The traps are inherited too. BJ's Gas earns zero — fuel is excluded from the 5% and from the 2% outside rate — and instead pays an instant 10 cents off per gallon when you pay with the card and scan your membership card at the pump. The 5% also excludes alcohol, tobacco, gift cards, membership fees, and anything routed through PayPal or another third-party wallet. If you are already a Club+ member for the other perks, the One+ is a straightforward upgrade over the One; if you would be paying for Club+ solely to unlock 5%, run the break-even first, and stick with the no-upgrade One card if your club spending does not clear it.

Common questions

Does BJ's One+ Mastercard have an annual fee?
No — BJ's One+ Mastercard has no annual fee.
What rewards does BJ's One+ Mastercard earn on everything else?
2x on all other purchases, in BJ's Rewards.
Does the BJ's One+ 5% stack with the Club+ membership's own 2% back?
No, and this is the most common misconception about the card. The One+ card's 5% at BJ's replaces the 2% that comes with the Club+ membership rather than adding to it, so your total at the register is 5%, not 7%. Budget accordingly when you decide whether the Club+ upgrade price is worth paying, because 5% is all you are buying.
Is the BJ's One+ Mastercard really free if it has no annual fee?
The card charges no annual fee, but it requires the paid Club+ membership tier, so the upgrade cost functions as the card's fee in every practical sense. Weigh it against the two extra points you earn at BJ's over the standard One card: roughly $20 more per $1,000 of club spending, which is the figure that has to cover the Club+ price before the card comes out ahead.
