How to choose
This category covers more than the subway: Uber and Lyft rides, taxis, parking, and tolls all land here. Discover it Cash Back leads at 5% with no annual fee, but that rate is conditional, while Wells Fargo Autograph Card earns a clean 3x with no annual fee and no fine print. Below them, a mix of point-earning cards and flat 2% options fills out the field.
The fine print splits three ways. Discover's 5% takes upkeep: activate each quarter, mind a combined cap, and expect a lower rate past it. Both American Express business cards, Blue Business Cash and Blue Business Plus, earn their 2% or 2x up to $50,000 a year, and Apple Card requires paying through the mobile wallet. The $95-a-year World of Hyatt and Atmos Rewards Ascent cards outrank flat 2% because we value their points at 2.8% and 2.6% back.
If quarterly activation and caps sound like homework, the floor in this category is unusually good. Wells Fargo Autograph Card pays 3x with no annual fee and no hoops, and Bilt Blue Card offers a no-fee 2x. On a typical commuter budget, the gap between chasing the top rate and using a card you never think about works out to a few dollars a month, so pick the one you will actually keep using.
The math
On $150 a month of transit & rideshare, Chase Freedom Flex returns about $90 a year at our valuations — a flat 2% card returns $36. Mind the ceiling: Chase Freedom Flex's top rate applies only up to $1,500/qtr (combined); past that, purchases drop to its lower rate.
Common questions
- What is the best credit card for transit & rideshare?
- Chase Freedom Flex leads with 5x (up to $1,500/qtr (combined); lower rate after the cap).
- How does SwipeCaddy pick the best transit & rideshare card?
- We rank each card by its reward rate times a conservative cash value of its points or miles — no inflated transfer valuations — and surface the fine print so the "best" rate is one you can actually get.
- Do transit and rideshare cards have spending caps?
- Some do. Discover it Cash Back applies a combined cap to its 5% rate and pays a lower rate once you cross it, and the two American Express business cards limit their 2% and 2x earning to $50,000 per year. If your transit spending runs heavy, check the caveats column and favor a card without those conditions, like Wells Fargo Autograph Card.
- Is a flat 2% card enough for rideshare and transit?
- It is a reasonable floor. Bilt Blue Card pays 2x with no annual fee and no caveats, and Apple Card matches 2% if you pay through the mobile wallet. You give up the higher earn of Discover's activated 5% or Autograph's 3x, but you also skip quarterly activation and caps. If simplicity matters more than the last dollar, 2% is fine.
