Good to know at Hilton
Hilton takes every major card network, so acceptance never decides this one — the math does. The new top earner is the Hilton Honors American Express Aspire Card at 14x points on stays booked directly with Hilton, roughly 5.6% back at our conservative valuation. The catch is the $550 annual fee: the Aspire only pencils out if you actually use its up-to-$400 in annual resort credits and up-to-$200 in airline credits, and get real nights out of the automatic Diamond status. Treat those as coupons you won't redeem and the fee swallows the rate.
The Hilton ladder now has three honest rungs. The Hilton Honors American Express Surpass Card stays the mid-tier pick: 12x, about 4.8% back, for $150 a year. The step up from Surpass to Aspire buys 2 extra points — roughly 0.8% — for $400 more in fees, a gap no amount of room spend closes on rate alone; the credits and Diamond status do the heavy lifting. At the bottom, the no-annual-fee Hilton Honors American Express Card earns 7x, about 2.8%, on direct bookings — a fine entry point if you sleep at a Hilton a couple of times a year.
Nothing here changes by channel: the ranking is the same whether you book on Hilton's site or pay at the front desk, and the Hilton rates carry no caps or activation hoops. If none of the co-brands are in your wallet, resist the instinct to reach for another travel card. The IHG One Rewards Premier Credit Card earns 5x here, but that works out to only about 2.5% at our valuations, and the British Airways and United cards land between 2.2% and 2.4% — the no-fee 3% Costco Anywhere Visa Card by Citi and Wells Fargo Autograph Card quietly beat them all at Hilton.
The math
Spend $250 a month at Hilton and Hilton Honors American Express Aspire Card returns about $168 a year at our valuations — a flat 2% card returns $60.
Common questions
- What is the best credit card at Hilton?
- Hilton Honors American Express Aspire Card earns the most at Hilton right now at 14x.
- How does SwipeCaddy pick the best card at Hilton?
- We rank each card by its reward rate times a conservative cash value of its points or miles — no inflated transfer valuations — and apply Hilton's card-acceptance rules, so the "best" card is one you can actually use at the register.
- Is the Hilton Honors American Express Aspire Card worth its $550 annual fee for Hilton stays?
- Only with the perks actually used. Its 14x rate leads this ranking at roughly 5.6% back, but that's just 0.8 points over the $150 Surpass — you'd need enormous Hilton spend to close a $400 fee gap on rate alone. The Aspire pencils when you reliably use the up-to-$400 resort credits and up-to-$200 airline credits and get breakfast or upgrade value from Diamond status. If those would go unused, the Hilton Honors American Express Surpass Card is the better hold.
- Do I earn differently at Hilton when I book online versus paying at check-in?
- No. The ranking is the same for online bookings and in-person payments, so your pick doesn't change by channel — just note that the top Hilton rates require booking directly with Hilton rather than through a third-party site. Hilton also accepts every major card network, so there's no acceptance issue to plan around. Choose your best card once — the 14x Aspire, the 12x Surpass, or a no-fee 3% option — and use it both ways.
