Our take

The Aspire just unseated its own sibling at the top of our Hilton ranking: 14x on eligible purchases made directly with hotels and resorts in the Hilton portfolio, ahead of the Surpass's 12x, plus Hilton Honors Diamond status and a free night reward every year. The catch arrives on the same line as the perks: a $550 annual fee, charged whether or not you use what it buys.

Amex's answer to that fee is up to $600 in annual credits — up to $400 in Hilton Resort credits and up to $200 in airline flight credits — with a CLEAR Plus credit on top. Read the resort credit literally: it is a resort credit, not a general Hilton credit, so it points at Hilton's resort properties rather than the roadside and airport hotels where many members actually sleep. And 'up to' is doing real work — an unused credit is worth zero, so the roughly $600-versus-$550 math only closes if both credits would have been natural spending anyway.

The earning is the strongest in the Hilton family. At SwipeCaddy's conservative 0.4-cent valuation of a Hilton point, 14x at Hilton works out to roughly 5.6 percent back, and the 7x rates — flights booked directly with airlines or through amextravel.com, car rentals booked directly with select companies, and U.S. restaurants including takeout and delivery — land near 2.8 percent. Everything else earns the base 3x, about 1.2 percent, there are no foreign transaction fees, and new cardmembers can earn 150,000 Hilton Honors points after $6,000 in purchases in the first 180 days.

In a wallet, the Aspire is the top rung of the Hilton ladder, not the whole ladder. It carries no grocery or gas bonus at all, so the Surpass — 6x at U.S. supermarkets and gas stations for a $150 annual fee, $0 the first year — keeps a job even alongside it, and it stays the better solo pick for anyone whose resort credit would go unused. If you genuinely sleep at Hilton resorts, run every Hilton stay, flight, direct car rental, and U.S. restaurant tab through the Aspire, and let the Surpass or a flat-rate cash-back card cover the rest.

The math

Run $400 a month of dining through this card and you're earning about $134 a year at our conservative valuations. Against the $550 annual fee, that top rate needs roughly $5,750 a month of dining spend before it beats a no-fee flat 2% card.

Common questions

Does Hilton Honors American Express Aspire Card have an annual fee?
Yes — $550 per year.
What does Hilton Honors American Express Aspire Card earn on dining?
7x on dining (u.s. merchants only).
What rewards does Hilton Honors American Express Aspire Card earn on everything else?
3x on all other purchases, in Hilton Honors.
What is the fine print on the Hilton Honors Aspire's $400 resort credit?
The benefit is up to $400 per year in Hilton Resort credits, and the operative word is resort: this is not a general Hilton credit, so it targets the chain's resort properties rather than the whole portfolio. The 'up to' matters just as much — credit you do not spend is worth nothing. Before counting the full $400 against the $550 annual fee, credit yourself only for what your actual Hilton travel would naturally use.
How do free nights work on the Hilton Honors Aspire card?
You receive an annual free night reward, with a second after $30,000 and a third after $60,000 in purchases in a calendar year. That first night arrives with no spending requirement, which separates the Aspire from the Surpass, where the Free Night Reward only comes after $15,000 in calendar-year spend.
Should I keep the Hilton Honors Surpass instead of the Aspire?
Stay on the Surpass if your Hilton earning comes mostly from everyday spending: the Aspire has no bonus for groceries or gas, while the Surpass earns 6x at U.S. supermarkets and gas stations for a $150 annual fee, $0 the first year. Choose the Aspire when you stay at actual Hilton resorts often enough to spend the $400 resort credit — that, plus Diamond status and 14x on Hilton stays, is what justifies the $550.
