Good to know at BJ's Gas
The card you use inside the club is usually the wrong card at its own pump, and this is exactly the kind of answer people get wrong. BJ's own cards earn nothing on fuel: gas is excluded from eligible BJ's purchases and excluded from the outside-of-BJ's rate as well, so both the BJ's One and the BJ's One+ pay zero at BJ's Gas. What the club gives you instead is an instant per-gallon discount — and the two cards are not the same here. The BJ's One takes 10 cents off a gallon; the BJ's One+ takes 15. Either way, claiming it requires paying with a BJ's card and scanning your membership card at the pump.
The discount and a rewards card are mutually exclusive, so price them against each other — and which card you hold decides the answer. A dime off is about 3.3% at $3.00 a gallon and 2.5% at $4.00, so the plain One loses to any 5% card. Fifteen cents is a different proposition: 5.0% at $3.00 and 3.75% at $4.00. At today's prices the One+ discount matches the best gas card on this page outright and only falls behind as fuel gets expensive. That leader is the AAA Travel Advantage Visa Signature Card at 5% on gas and EV charging, with no annual fee. Its ceiling is $350 of cash back per calendar year across gas and EV charging combined, roughly $7,000 of fuel, after which it drops to 1% — a cap the instant discount does not have, which is worth remembering if you buy a lot of fuel.
Two rotating cards tie that 5%, with strings attached that the number alone does not show. The Chase Freedom Flex and the Discover it Cash Back pay 5% only in quarters whose active categories include gas, only after you activate the quarter, and only on the first $1,500 of spending in it. Miss the activation or shop in the wrong quarter and they pay 1%, at which point BJ's own discount is comfortably the better deal on either card. Check the calendar before you assume the 5%, and if the quarter is not live, put the BJ's card in the reader and take the discount.
