Good to know at Walgreens

Walgreens takes every major card network, in store and online, so acceptance never decides this one. The real choice sits at the top of the ranking: Discover it Cash Back earns 5% straight cash, while the store's own myWalgreens Mastercard earns 5x points that work out to roughly a 4.5% cash equivalent. Neither charges an annual fee, so the tradeoff is purely about how each rate is earned.

That 5% from Discover comes with homework: you have to activate it each quarter, the rate applies up to a combined cap, and it drops once the cap is hit. Bank of America Customized Cash Rewards asks for similar effort, since you choose the category and a combined cap applies there too. Apple Card's 3% only shows up when you pay through the mobile wallet. The myWalgreens Mastercard and Chase Freedom Unlimited carry no such conditions.

If nothing at the top of the list is in your wallet, Chase Freedom Unlimited is the quiet pick: 3x, no annual fee, and none of the caveats above. Business spenders have the Blue Business Cash Card from American Express at 2% up to $50,000 a year, while Spark Cash Plus earns the same 2% but carries a $150 yearly fee, which is hard to justify on drugstore runs alone.

The math

Spend $100 a month at Walgreens and Discover it Cash Back returns about $60 a year at our valuations — a flat 2% card returns $24.

Common questions

What is the best credit card at Walgreens?
Discover it Cash Back earns the most at Walgreens right now at 5%.
How does SwipeCaddy pick the best card at Walgreens?
We rank each card by its reward rate times a conservative cash value of its points or miles — no inflated transfer valuations — and apply Walgreens's card-acceptance rules, so the "best" card is one you can actually use at the register.
Is the myWalgreens Mastercard worth getting for Walgreens runs?
It earns 5x at Walgreens with no annual fee and no activation or cap conditions, which makes it the lowest-maintenance high earner here. The catch is value: those points work out to about a 4.5% cash equivalent, just under Discover's straight 5%. If you would rather not manage quarterly activations, the store card is the simpler keeper.
Does Discover it Cash Back always earn 5% at Walgreens?
No. The 5% requires activating each quarter, applies only up to a combined cap, and the rate falls once you pass it. Miss the activation or exceed the cap and you earn less than the no-caveat options in the ranking. Set a quarterly reminder to activate, or default to a card without conditions.

Rates reflect each card's best case at this merchant and can change; check the issuer's terms before applying.
