Good to know at United Airlines

United Airlines takes cards on every major network, so this ranking is decided by earn rates, not acceptance — and for the first time the airline's own card leads it. The United Club Card earns 5 miles per dollar on United tickets and other eligible United purchases, worth about 6.0% at our 1.2¢ MileagePlus valuation. That edges out the former leaders: The Platinum Card from American Express still earns 5x but only up to a spending cap, and Discover it Cash Back's 5% requires quarterly activation and carries its own cap. The Club Card's 5x has no listed cap, and the order is the same whether you book online or in person.

Chase's marketing says the Club Card earns 11 miles per dollar on United flights and the United Quest Card 10x. Read those as composites: any MileagePlus member already earns 6x member miles on the fare with no card at all, and the card's own earn — 5x on the Club, 4x on the Quest — stacks on top. We rank only the card earn, since the member miles arrive no matter which card you pay with. On that honest math the co-brand family orders itself: Club 5x (about 6.0%), Quest 4x (about 4.8%), and the United Explorer Card third at 3x, worth about 3.6%.

The fee ladder is the real decision. The Club Card costs $695 a year, not waived the first year, so its lead only pencils out if you also use the United Club lounge membership and free first and second checked bags it carries. The Quest runs $350, softened by $200 in United TravelBank cash every year, and the Explorer is $150 with the first year waived. If you would rather skip airline cards entirely, Chase Sapphire Reserve's clean 4x has no listed caveats — though its $795 fee is for frequent travelers — and Wells Fargo Autograph still pays 3x with no annual fee, the calmer pick for occasional United flying.

The math

Spend $250 a month at United Airlines and United Club Card returns about $165 a year at our valuations — a flat 2% card returns $60.

Common questions

What is the best credit card at United Airlines?
United Club Card earns the most at United Airlines right now at 5x.
How does SwipeCaddy pick the best card at United Airlines?
We rank each card by its reward rate times a conservative cash value of its points or miles — no inflated transfer valuations — and apply United Airlines's card-acceptance rules, so the "best" card is one you can actually use at the register.
Does the United Club Card really earn 11x on United flights?
Not as card earn. The advertised 11x is a marketing composite: 6x MileagePlus member miles that any member earns on the fare, plus the card's own 5x on United purchases. Only the 5x depends on the card, which is why we rank it that way — worth about 6.0% at our 1.2¢ valuation. The United Quest Card's advertised 10x works the same: 6x member miles plus 4x card earn.
Is the United Club Card worth its $695 annual fee?
On earn alone it tops this table at 5x, about 6.0% at our valuation, with no listed cap — but the $695 fee is not waived the first year, so the case rests on the United Club lounge membership and two free checked bags. If you will not use the lounge, the United Quest Card earns 4x for $350 with $200 in TravelBank cash each year, and Wells Fargo Autograph's no-fee 3x remains the simple pick.
