Good to know at Kohl's
Kohl's takes all major card networks, in store and online, so acceptance never decides this one. What matters is the gap at the top: the Kohl's Card earns 7.5x with no annual fee, which our conservative valuation prices at about 6 cents per dollar. Nothing else on the list comes close; the next-best options are flat 2 percent cards, decent floors but a different league entirely.
The ranking does not change between the register and Kohls.com, so one decision covers both. Behind the leader, the fine print is mild but real: American Express's two Blue Business cards are worth about 2 percent each, but only up to $50,000 a year; the Apple Card pays its 2 percent only through the mobile wallet; and Capital One's Venture line charges $95 to $395 a year for the same 2x.
If the Kohl's Card is not in your wallet, do not overthink it. Any of the no-annual-fee flat 2 percent options here is a solid fallback, worth 2 cents per dollar. And paying $95, $150, or $395 a year for the same 2 percent in value buys you nothing extra at Kohl's, so the fee cards only make sense if you hold them for other reasons.
The math
Spend $100 a month at Kohl's and Kohl's Card returns about $72 a year at our valuations — a flat 2% card returns $24.
Common questions
- What is the best credit card at Kohl's?
- Kohl's Card earns the most at Kohl's right now at 7.5x.
- How does SwipeCaddy pick the best card at Kohl's?
- We rank each card by its reward rate times a conservative cash value of its points or miles — no inflated transfer valuations — and apply Kohl's's card-acceptance rules, so the "best" card is one you can actually use at the register.
- Is the Kohl's Card worth it if you only shop at Kohl's occasionally?
- It carries no annual fee, so there is no yearly cost to holding it, and its 7.5x rate is worth about 6 cents per dollar under our valuation, triple what a flat 2 percent card returns here. If Kohl's shows up in your budget regularly, it earns its slot; if you shop there once or twice a year, a no-fee 2 percent card is close enough.
- Is the card ranking different on Kohls.com than in the store?
- No. The ranking is identical in store and on Kohls.com: the Kohl's Card leads both channels at 7.5x, followed by the same lineup of flat 2 percent cards. One wrinkle applies everywhere: the Apple Card needs a mobile-wallet payment to earn its 2 percent. Pick your card once and use it in either channel.
