Good to know at Aldi
Aldi rings up as a regular grocery purchase, and the store doesn't limit which card networks it takes, so the only question is which grocery card in your wallet earns the most. The Blue Cash Preferred Card from American Express leads at 6% back, capped at $6,000 in grocery spending per year, in exchange for a $95 annual fee. Below it, everything else in the ranking works out to between 2.8% and 4% in cash-equivalent terms.
The in-store and online rankings differ, but only at the margins. The top six cards are identical in both channels. Chase Sapphire Preferred shows up only in the online list, because its 3x rate here applies to online orders, while the Wyndham Rewards Earner Plus Card makes the cut in-store only. Unless one of those two is your best available card, the channel you shop through doesn't change the answer.
If the Blue Cash Preferred isn't in your wallet, the drop-off is manageable. Two no-annual-fee cards earn 3% at Aldi: the Blue Cash Everyday Card from American Express, which carries a spending cap and a lower rate after it, and the Capital One Savor Cash Rewards, which lists no cap. The American Express Gold Card sits in second at 4x, but its $325 annual fee is a lot to carry for grocery earning alone.
The math
Spend $600 a month at Aldi and Blue Cash Preferred Card from American Express returns about $372 a year at our valuations — a flat 2% card returns $144.
Common questions
- What is the best credit card at Aldi?
- Blue Cash Preferred Card from American Express earns the most at Aldi right now at 6%.
- How does SwipeCaddy pick the best card at Aldi?
- We rank each card by its reward rate times a conservative cash value of its points or miles — no inflated transfer valuations — and apply Aldi's card-acceptance rules, so the "best" card is one you can actually use at the register.
- Do I need an annual-fee card to earn well at Aldi?
- No. The Blue Cash Everyday Card from American Express and the Capital One Savor Cash Rewards both earn 3% at Aldi with no annual fee, though the Blue Cash Everyday has a spending cap and a lower rate after it. Paying $95 for the Blue Cash Preferred only makes sense if your grocery spending is heavy enough to out-earn the fee.
- Are 5x points better than 3% cash back at Aldi?
- Not automatically. The Choice Privileges Select Mastercard earns 5x at Aldi, but at conservative point valuations that works out to about 3% in cash terms, level with the no-fee cash-back cards. The Aeroplan Card's 3x, by contrast, is worth roughly 3.9%. Compare the cash-equivalent rate, not the multiplier, before you pick which card to swipe.
