Best cards for rent

Bilt Blue Card leads with 1x (choose this category).

Rankings use issuer rates verified as of August 16, 2026.

Rent / mortgage. Most processors surcharge ~3% — a 2% card loses money; Bilt is the fee-free path. Processors take ACH or a card on file, so there is no phone to tap: mobile-wallet offers are infeasible here.

Heads up: most processors add a ~3% fee on rent, so a flat cash-back card can lose money here — a card built for it is usually the only way to come out ahead.

How to choose

Rent flips the usual ranking logic. The Bilt Blue Card sits on top with just 1x earning because it is the only card here that dodges the roughly 3% surcharge most rent processors add. Every 2% or 2x card below it earns more on paper, yet once that fee lands, the net result goes negative. On rent, avoiding the fee matters more than the rate.

The fine print is unusually uniform here: every card below the leader carries the same processor-fee caveat. Both American Express business cards also cap their rate at $50,000 per year, and Apple Card wants the payment made through the mobile wallet. Annual fees range from zero up to $395 on the two Venture X cards, costs that only deepen a hole the surcharge has already dug.

There is one scenario where the flat earners claw back the lead: a landlord or processor that does not add the fee. The caveats say the surcharge usually applies, not always, so check your payment portal before deciding. If rent goes through fee-free, a 2% or 2x card wins outright; if not, the Bilt Blue Card and its enrollment requirement remain the only path that nets ahead.

Common questions

What is the best credit card for rent?
Bilt Blue Card leads with 1x (choose this category).
How does SwipeCaddy pick the best rent card?
We rank each card by its reward rate times a conservative cash value of its points or miles — no inflated transfer valuations — and surface the fine print so the "best" rate is one you can actually get.
Does paying rent with a credit card cost extra?
Usually, yes. Most rent processors add a surcharge of about 3%, which is larger than the 2% or 2x rewards a typical flat-rate card earns, so the transaction nets a loss. The Bilt Blue Card is the exception in this ranking because it skips the fee, though it requires enrollment. Confirm your processor's fee before charging rent.
Do rent rewards cards have earning caps?
Two do. The Blue Business Cash Card and The Blue Business Plus Credit Card from American Express both limit their 2% and 2x rates to $50,000 per year. The other cards in this ranking show no cap, including the fee-free Bilt Blue Card at 1x. If your yearly rent stays under $50,000, the caps never come into play.
