Good to know at Verizon

Verizon is the clearest case we have of a co-brand losing on its own home turf. The Chase Ink Business Cash Credit Card leads this ranking at 5% on phone and internet services, on up to $25,000 of that spend a year, and it beats the card with Verizon printed on it for the charge most people actually care about: the monthly bill.

The reason is a split inside the Verizon Visa Card itself. Its headline 4% applies to Verizon purchases such as devices and accessories, while the monthly bill payment earns only 1%. So the card named after the merchant is not the best card for the merchant's main recurring charge. That is worth reading twice before you sign up for it to save on service you pay for every month.

The rewards currency pulls the number down further. Verizon Dollars are worth about 0.9 cents each and can be spent only against your Verizon account, which is why a nominal 4% scores 3.60 in our model and why the card ranks below a plain 5%. If you are buying a phone outright, that 4% on hardware is real value. If you are trying to earn on the bill, put the bill on the Ink and leave the co-brand for the device.

The math

Spend $150 a month at Verizon and Ink Business Cash Credit Card returns about $90 a year at our valuations — a flat 2% card returns $36.

Common questions

What is the best credit card at Verizon?
Ink Business Cash Credit Card earns the most at Verizon right now at 5x.
How does SwipeCaddy pick the best card at Verizon?
We rank each card by its reward rate times a conservative cash value of its points or miles — no inflated transfer valuations — and apply Verizon's card-acceptance rules, so the "best" card is one you can actually use at the register.
Why does the Verizon Visa Card lose on the Verizon page?
Because its best rate does not touch its biggest charge. The 4% covers Verizon purchases like phones and accessories, but the monthly bill payment earns 1%, and the rewards it pays come as Verizon Dollars worth roughly 0.9 cents that only apply to your Verizon account. A 5% card paying regular cash back on the same bill simply pays more, and the cash is not locked to one company.
Is the Verizon Visa Card worth carrying at all?
It can be, for a narrow job. If you buy devices and accessories from Verizon, 4% on that hardware is genuine, and Verizon Dollars are easy to use when your bill arrives every month anyway. Just do not expect it to be your everyday earner: the value is trapped in one merchant at about 0.9 cents per point, so treat it as a device card rather than a wallet staple.

Rates reflect each card's best case at this merchant and can change; check the issuer's terms before applying.
