How to choose

One card reaches above the flat-rate pack here, and it is a surprise: the myWalgreens Mastercard tops this ranking at 3x, because the card's 3% health-and-wellness merchant group extends to pet stores by merchant category code. Two asterisks come with that. Its rewards are Walgreens Cash, which our conservative valuation puts at about 2.7% in cash terms rather than a full 3%, and the merchant-category reading is one we have flagged for review — a store card leading a category on an MCC technicality deserves the skepticism.

Behind it sits the familiar flat-2% pack, where the differences live in the fine print rather than the rate. Apple Card pays 2% only when you check out through Apple Pay; hand over the physical card and the rate drops. Citi Double Cash, Wells Fargo Active Cash, and the Fidelity Rewards Visa Signature pay 2% on everything with no annual fee and no wallet requirement. Blue Business Cash and Blue Business Plus match them but are business cards capped at $50,000 a year. On the roughly $80 a month a pet household spends here, the gap between 2.7% and 2% is about $7 a year — so the right answer is usually whichever of these is already in your wallet.

The one place every general card loses is Petco. The Petco Pay Mastercard earns 6% back in Pals Rewards there, which our conservative cash valuation puts at about 4.8% — roughly double the general-card ceiling — though you have to enroll in Pals Rewards, and the earnings arrive as store rewards rather than cash. PetSmart shoppers have no equivalent: our catalog lists no PetSmart store card, so the best card you already hold is the honest answer at that register.

The math

On $300 a month of pet supplies, myWalgreens Mastercard returns about $97 a year at our valuations — a flat 2% card returns $72.

Common questions

What is the best credit card for pet supplies?
myWalgreens Mastercard leads with 3x.
How does SwipeCaddy pick the best pet supplies card?
We rank each card by its reward rate times a conservative cash value of its points or miles — no inflated transfer valuations — and surface the fine print so the "best" rate is one you can actually get.
Is there a credit card that earns bonus rewards on pet supplies?
One, with caveats: the myWalgreens Mastercard's 3% health-and-wellness merchant group covers pet stores by merchant category code, which we value at about 2.7% in cash terms — and we have flagged that category reading for review. Otherwise the ceiling is the flat 2% a general cash-back card earns everywhere, and the only bigger number is store-specific: the Petco Pay Mastercard out-earns everything, but only inside Petco.
Should I use the Petco Pay Mastercard for pet supplies?
Only at Petco. There it earns 6% in Pals Rewards, which we value at about 4.8% in cash terms — well above the general-card ceiling — but enrollment in Pals Rewards is required and the rewards come back as store credit, not cash. At PetSmart, which has no store card in our catalog, or at any other pet retailer, your best general card is the better pick.
