Salons, barbers, spas and massage, plus standalone cosmetics shops. A counter inside another store rings as its host — Sephora inside Kohl's is a department store purchase, and Ulta inside Target is a superstore one.

How to choose
Exactly one card in our catalog pays a real bonus at the salon chair, and it comes with a string attached. The myWalgreens Mastercard pays 3% on what Walgreens calls health and wellness purchases made away from Walgreens, and Walgreens names spa and salon appointments in that group outright. The string is the currency: it pays in Walgreens Cash, which you can only spend back at Walgreens. We value that at 0.9 cents, so the honest comparison is roughly 2.7% against a flat 2% card — a real edge, but only if Walgreens is somewhere you shop anyway.
If it is not, the old advice still stands. The Apple Card is next at 2%, though that number is its mobile-wallet rate — the 2% Daily Cash it pays on anything bought through Apple Pay — and not a beauty bonus at all; pay with the physical titanium card and it drops to 1%. No issuer we track pays a dedicated bonus on barbers, massage or standalone cosmetics shops. For most wallets, the card for the salon chair is simply your best no-annual-fee 2% everywhere card.
There is also a partial exception worth knowing. The Venmo Credit Card picks your top spending category automatically each statement period and pays 3% on it, and Health & Beauty is one of its eight eligible categories, with nothing to activate and no cap. The catch is the word top: it only pays 3% here if beauty genuinely outspent your groceries, gas, dining and the rest that month, which is rare. Because the winning category is known only after the fact, we rank the card at its 1% base rather than credit it with a 3% it may never reach for you.
The boundary that catches people is where the register lives, not what is in the bag. A counter inside another store rings as its host: Sephora inside Kohl's is a department-store purchase and Ulta inside Target is a superstore one, so the winner there is your department-store or superstore card, not this list. And keep the stakes in proportion — on the roughly $85 a month we assume for this category, about $1,020 a year, the gap between a flat 2% and the Walgreens card's effective 2.7% is about seven dollars. That is not worth an annual fee, a quarterly enrollment, or any rearranging of your wallet. Tap the no-fee 2% card and move on.
The math
On $85 a month of beauty & self-care, myWalgreens Mastercard returns about $28 a year at our valuations — a flat 2% card returns $20.
Common questions
- What is the best credit card for beauty & self-care?
- myWalgreens Mastercard leads with 3x.
- How does SwipeCaddy pick the best beauty & self-care card?
- We rank each card by its reward rate times a conservative cash value of its points or miles — no inflated transfer valuations — and surface the fine print so the "best" rate is one you can actually get.
- Is there a credit card with a beauty or salon bonus category?
- One, with a catch. The myWalgreens Mastercard pays 3% on health and wellness purchases away from Walgreens, and Walgreens lists spa and salon appointments in that group — but it pays in Walgreens Cash, spendable only at Walgreens, which we value at 0.9 cents and works out to about 2.7%. Beyond that, no issuer we track pays a dedicated bonus on barbers, massage or standalone cosmetics shops, and the next card down is the Apple Card's 2% — a rate it pays on everything bought through Apple Pay, not on beauty specifically. If you do not shop at Walgreens, this stays a category to spend from your default 2% card rather than optimize.
- Does Sephora inside Kohl's count as a beauty purchase?
- No. A counter inside another store rings as its host, so that one is a department-store purchase, and Ulta inside Target is a superstore purchase. It is worth checking before you swipe, because those two categories do have real bonus cards behind them. The host store's rate is the one you will actually earn, and it is often better than the 2% you would get at a standalone salon or cosmetics shop.
