Our take

The Delta SkyMiles Reserve Business Card is the top of American Express's Delta business lineup, and its $650 annual fee is the first thing to reckon with. The earn structure is narrow on purpose: 3x miles on purchases made directly with Delta, 1.5x on eligible transit and on U.S. shipping and U.S. office supply store purchases, and 1x on everything else. We value a SkyMiles mile at 1.1 cents, so the 3x tier works out to roughly 3.3 cents per dollar and the 1x base to about 1.1.

Two details separate this card from the Delta SkyMiles Platinum Business Card, and they are easy to get backwards. First, the 3x here is Delta only — hotels are not part of it, while the Platinum Business bundles hotels into its 3x. Second, the 1.5x categories on this card carry no stated spend cap, where the Platinum Business runs its 1.5x legs under a shared annual limit. Do not assume the two Delta business cards behave alike.

There is also an earning boost the app cannot represent. American Express says that after you spend $150,000 in purchases on the card in a year, all eligible purchases earn 1.5 miles for the rest of that year. That is a base rate switched on by a spending threshold, and SwipeCaddy does not track your year-to-date spend, so our rankings use the 1x base throughout. With a 1x floor, everyday business spend belongs on a flat-rate card; this one earns its keep on direct Delta purchases and, secondarily, on transit, U.S. shipping, and U.S. office supply.

The math

Run $150 a month of transit & rideshare through this card and you're earning about $30 a year at our conservative valuations.

Common questions

Does Delta SkyMiles Reserve Business Card have an annual fee?
Yes — $650 per year.
What does Delta SkyMiles Reserve Business Card earn on transit & rideshare?
1.5x on transit & rideshare.
What rewards does Delta SkyMiles Reserve Business Card earn on everything else?
1x on all other purchases, in Delta SkyMiles.
Does the 3x on the Delta SkyMiles Reserve Business Card include hotels?
No. On this card the 3x applies only to purchases made directly with Delta. That is a real difference from the Delta SkyMiles Platinum Business Card, whose 3x tier covers Delta and hotels together. If hotel spend is what you are trying to place, this card sends it to the 1x base rate instead.
What is the $150,000 spending boost, and why isn't it in the ranking?
American Express raises your rate on all eligible purchases to 1.5 miles for the remainder of the year once you have spent $150,000 on the card in that year. It is a genuine benefit, but it depends on your running annual total, which SwipeCaddy does not track. We therefore rank the card at its 1x base, so a very high spender earns more than we show rather than less.
