Venmo Credit Card
Synchrony · Visa · No annual fee · Earns Cash Back
3% on your top spending category each statement period, 2% on the second, 1% on everything else — chosen automatically from eight categories, with nothing to activate and no cap. Because the winning category is only known after the fact, SwipeCaddy ranks this card at its 1% base and flags where it could pay more. You apply inside the Venmo app and need an account at least 30 days old.

Our take
The Venmo Credit Card pays 3% on your top spending category each statement period, 2% on the second, and 1% on everything else — and that is exactly why SwipeCaddy ranks it at its 1% base rate everywhere and only flags where it could pay more. You do not pick the winning category and neither does the app: it is assigned automatically after the statement closes. Standing at the register, there is no honest way to know whether the tank of gas you are about to buy will settle at 3% or at 1%, because that depends on what you spend for the rest of the month. We will not tell you to swipe for 3% you might not get.
That conservatism is about timing, not quality. The eight eligible categories are Dining & Nightlife, Travel, Bills & Utilities, Health & Beauty, Grocery, Gas, Transportation, and Entertainment; there is nothing to activate, nothing to select, and the issuer states there is no maximum on the bonus rates. Contrast that with the U.S. Bank Cash+ Visa Signature Card, which pays 5% on two categories you choose but caps that at the first $2,000 of combined quarterly spend and drops everything — including its 2% pick — to 1% if you miss re-enrollment, which closes five days before the quarter ends. Venmo asks nothing of you at all, which makes this a poor "which card do I swipe right now" card and a decent set-and-forget one.
It only pays off if your spending is genuinely lopsided. If groceries top your statement every single month, $500 of groceries at 3% returns $15 instead of the $10 a flat 2% card pays — about $60 a year, and that is the whole edge. Split your month evenly across four categories and the 3% lands somewhere unpredictable, so the card behaves like the 1% we rank it at. Practical notes: $0 annual fee and no foreign transaction fee, so there is no break-even math to run; rewards land in your Venmo balance rather than as a statement credit; you apply inside the Venmo app rather than on the web, your account must be at least 30 days old, and the card is offered to eligible users rather than open to everyone. It is also the only card in our catalog that covers Health & Beauty at all, which is why it appears on that guide despite ranking at base — carry it as background spend behind your specialists, not as your answer at checkout.

Common questions
- Does Venmo Credit Card have an annual fee?
- No — Venmo Credit Card has no annual fee.
- What rewards does Venmo Credit Card earn on everything else?
- 1% on all other purchases, in Cash Back.
- Why does SwipeCaddy rank the Venmo Credit Card at 1% when it advertises 3%?
- Because the 3% is retroactive. The card looks at your statement after it closes, decides which of the eight categories you spent the most in, and pays 3% there, 2% on the runner-up, and 1% on the rest. At the moment you swipe, nobody knows which category will win — it depends on the purchases you have not made yet. Ranking it at its 1% base is the only recommendation we can make honestly, so we rank at base and flag the categories where it could pay more.
- How do I get the Venmo Credit Card, and where do the rewards go?
- You apply inside the Venmo app, not through a web form, and your Venmo account has to be at least 30 days old. The card is offered to eligible users rather than open to anyone who wants it, so an invitation may simply not appear in your app. Rewards are paid into your Venmo balance, where you can spend, send, or transfer them out — not issued as a statement credit. The card carries a $0 annual fee and no foreign transaction fee.
