This card makes the most sense if American Airlines is already your airline. It earns 2x AAdvantage miles on eligible American Airlines purchases, plus 2x at restaurants and gas stations, and your first checked bag flies free. At SwipeCaddy's conservative 1.2-cent valuation per mile, those 2x categories work out to roughly a 2.4% return, so the everyday categories genuinely pull their weight.

The tradeoffs are real. The $99 annual fee is waived the first year; after that, you need enough American flying, or steady dining and gas spend, to justify it. Everything else earns just 1x, and the 2x on American Airlines covers eligible purchases only, not all airfare. Miles also carry redemption risk that cash back does not: the value only shows up when you actually book flights.

In a small wallet, treat this card as a specialist. Let it handle eligible American Airlines purchases, restaurants, and gas, and route everything else to a flat-rate card so the 1x base rate rarely fires. It also charges no foreign transaction fees, which makes it a reasonable card to carry on international trips, especially the ones you have already booked on American.
