Our take
The VentureOne Rewards is the $0-annual-fee door into Capital One's miles ecosystem: unlimited 1.25 miles per dollar on every purchase, 5 miles per dollar on hotels, vacation rentals and rental cars booked through Capital One Travel, no foreign transaction fee, and a 20,000-mile bonus after $500 of spending in the first three months. It also carries a 0% intro APR for 15 months on purchases and balance transfers, which is rare on a travel card.
The catch is the base rate. 1.25 miles per dollar is the weakest earn in the Venture family, and unless you value Capital One miles well above a cent each, a flat 2% cash-back card out-earns it on everyday spending. The 5X headline is portal-only — book the same hotel outside Capital One Travel, or pay incidentals at the front desk, and you are back at 1.25X. Flights never get the 5X on this card at all, even through the portal.
What the $0 fee buys is optionality. Miles transfer to 15+ airline and hotel loyalty programs — the same partners the $95 Venture and the premium Venture X use — and they never expire for the life of the account. That makes the VentureOne the cheapest way to keep a Capital One miles balance alive, whether as a first travel card or as the downgrade landing spot when a Venture's fee stops earning its keep. One rule before applying: no bonus if you received a new-cardmember bonus on the VentureOne, Venture or Venture X in the past 48 months.
In a wallet, it plays the understudy: if you hold a Venture Rewards at 2X or a Venture X, those do the daily earning, and the VentureOne exists to hold the miles, skip the fee, and cover spending abroad without a foreign transaction surcharge. Run the math before making it your only card — the Venture's extra 0.75 miles per dollar pays for its $95 fee at roughly $12,700 of annual spend, and below that line the free card quietly wins.
The math
Run $250 a month of hotels through this card and you're earning about $150 a year at our conservative valuations. There's no annual fee to earn back — everything above the 1.25x base rate is pure upside.

Common questions
- Does VentureOne Rewards have an annual fee?
- No — VentureOne Rewards has no annual fee.
- What does VentureOne Rewards earn on hotels?
- 5x on hotels (book via capital one travel).
- What rewards does VentureOne Rewards earn on everything else?
- 1.25x on all other purchases, in Capital One Miles.
- Is the VentureOne better than the Venture Rewards card?
- It depends on volume. The Venture earns 2 miles per dollar for a $95 annual fee; the VentureOne earns 1.25 for free. Valuing miles at a cent each, the Venture's extra 0.75 miles per dollar covers its fee at roughly $12,700 of annual card spend — below that the VentureOne comes out ahead, above it the fee pays for itself. Both cards share the same 5X portal categories for hotels, vacation rentals and rental cars.
- Do flights booked through Capital One Travel earn 5X miles?
- No. On this card the 5X is limited to hotels, vacation rentals and rental cars booked through Capital One Travel — the pricing disclosure says so explicitly. Flights earn the 1.25X base rate whether you book through the portal or directly with the airline. In this family, the card that bonuses portal flights is the Venture X, at 5X.
- What is the welcome bonus and who qualifies?
- Capital One advertises 20,000 bonus miles after $500 in purchases within the first three months of account opening. You are not eligible if you received a new-cardmember bonus on the VentureOne, Venture or Venture X in the past 48 months, so plan the order of applications if you intend to move within the family.
