Our take
The Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant American Express Card is the premium Marriott co-brand, and the catch is right in the price: at $650 a year it earns the same 6x at participating Marriott Bonvoy hotels as siblings costing a fraction as much, so you are not paying for a better earn table. Beyond Marriott it earns 3x at restaurants worldwide and 3x on flights booked directly with airlines, with a 2x base and no foreign transaction fees.
The numbers deserve a sober read. SwipeCaddy values a Bonvoy point at 0.7 cents, so 6x works out near 4.2% back, the 3x categories land around 2.1%, and the 2x base trails a flat 2% cash-back card at roughly 1.4%. Two details in the fine print help: the 3x dining rate now applies at restaurants worldwide — the old U.S.-only restriction was lifted — and flights earn 3x only when booked directly with the airline. New cardholders can earn 150,000 bonus points after $6,000 in purchases within the first 180 days.
The real case for the $650 is everything that is not an earn rate. The card confers Marriott Bonvoy Platinum Elite status outright, up to $300 a year in dining statement credits, and an annual free night award worth up to 85,000 points — roughly $595 at our valuation. But the credits arrive as $25 per month, so a skipped month is $25 you never get back, and the free night only pays if you actually redeem it at a property worth the points.
In your wallet, the Brilliant is a perks card wearing a hotel card's uniform. At the front desk it ties the $95 Boundless and the $250 Bountiful at 6x, which is why the fee tiebreak puts the Boundless first on our Marriott page. Carry the Brilliant only when Platinum Elite status, the $300 in dining credits, and the 85,000-point night justify the fee on their own; give it Marriott stays, restaurants, and direct airfare, and let a flat-rate card cover the rest.
The math
Run $400 a month of dining through this card and you're earning about $101 a year at our conservative valuations. Against the $650 annual fee, that top rate needs roughly $54,175 a month of dining spend before it beats a no-fee flat 2% card.

Common questions
- Does Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant American Express Card have an annual fee?
- Yes — $650 per year.
- What does Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant American Express Card earn on dining?
- 3x on dining.
- What rewards does Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant American Express Card earn on everything else?
- 2x on all other purchases, in Marriott Bonvoy.
- Is the Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant worth the $650 annual fee?
- Not on earn rates alone — its 6x at Marriott matches the $95 Boundless. The math turns on the perks: up to $300 a year in dining credits, an annual free night worth up to 85,000 points (about $595 at SwipeCaddy's 0.7-cent valuation), and Platinum Elite status. Capture the credits every month and redeem the night well, and the perks clear the fee; miss them, and the cheaper siblings win.
- How does the Brilliant's $300 dining credit actually work?
- It is not a lump sum. The credit arrives as up to $25 in statement credits each month, so reaching the full $300 requires a qualifying restaurant charge in all twelve months — a month you skip is $25 forfeited. The card also earns 3x at restaurants worldwide, so the same dinner that triggers the credit earns bonus points too.
- Why does the Boundless rank ahead of the Brilliant on SwipeCaddy's Marriott page?
- Because at the register they tie: both earn 6x at participating Marriott Bonvoy hotels, and when earn rates tie, our ranking breaks the tie by annual fee — $95 beats $650. The Brilliant's advantages live off the earn table: Platinum Elite status, the $300 in dining credits, and a free night worth up to 85,000 points versus the Boundless's 35,000.
