Our take

The American Express Business Gold Card is built for business owners whose spending concentrates in a few places but shifts month to month. Instead of fixed bonus categories, it pays 4x Membership Rewards points on your top two eligible categories each billing cycle, so the card adapts to wherever your money actually went. If your business spends heavily in one or two areas, that structure does the optimizing for you.

The tradeoff is a $375 annual fee with no signup bonus to soften it, so the ongoing earn has to carry the whole case. SwipeCaddy values Membership Rewards points at a conservative 1 cent each, which makes 4x roughly a 4 percent return; at that rate it takes roughly $9,400 a year in bonus-category spending just to cover the fee. The 4x is also capped at $150,000 per year across both categories combined.

Everything outside your top two categories earns the 1x base rate, which is thin on its own. In a small wallet, the Business Gold works best as the specialist: send your concentrated business categories here and route general spending to a flat-rate card that sets a higher floor. If your spending is spread evenly across many categories, the fee is hard to justify.

Common questions

Does American Express Business Gold Card have an annual fee?
Yes — $375 per year.
What rewards does American Express Business Gold Card earn on everything else?
1x on all other purchases, in American Express Membership Rewards.
Do you have to pick the Business Gold's 4x categories yourself?
No. The card applies 4x to your top two eligible categories each billing cycle based on where you actually spent, so the bonus follows your spending rather than a preset pick. The word eligible matters, though — only qualifying categories count toward the top two. Check that your biggest spending areas are eligible before you count on the 4x.
What happens after you hit the $150,000 cap on 4x?
The 4x applies to up to $150,000 per year in combined spending across your top two eligible categories. Past that point the elevated rate no longer applies and spending earns the card's 1x base rate in Membership Rewards points. If your business regularly spends well past the cap, plan on routing the overflow to another card in your wallet.
